Seven Years in Tibet is an amazing book: detailing the lives of Tibet’s inhabitants before the Chinese invasion. Harrer takes great care in describing not only the culture of his adopted home, but the landscapes of a once placid and peaceful country. It’s a great read for anyone interested in adventure, anthropology, or simply wants to learn about some of the mysteries found at “the roof of the world”.

In this vivid memoir that has sold millions of copies worldwide, Heinrich Harrer recounts his adventures as one of the first Europeans ever to enter Tibet. Harrer was traveling in India when the Second World War erupted. He was subsequently seized and imprisoned by British authorities. After several attempts, he escaped and crossed the rugged, frozen Himalayas, surviving by duping government officials and depending on the generosity of villagers for food and shelter.Harrer finally reached his ultimate destination-the Forbidden City of Lhasa-without money, or permission to be in Tibet.

But Tibetan hospitality and his own curious appearance worked in Harrer?s favor, allowing him unprecedented acceptance among the upper classes. His intelligence and European ways also intrigued the young Dalai Lama, and Harrer soon became His Holiness?s tutor and trusted confidant. When the Chinese invaded Tibet in 1950, Harrer and the Dalai Lama fled the country together. This timeless story illuminates Eastern culture, as well as the childhood of His Holiness and the current plight of Tibetans. It is a must-read for lovers of travel, adventure, history, and culture. A motion picture, under the direction of Jean-Jacques Annaud, will feature Brad Pitt in the lead role of Heinrich Harrer.

Slow Cooker Recipes Cookbook: Easy, Healthy and Delicious Recipes

My name is Clark Weber. I am a Chef in New York. These are the Slow Cooker recipes that I like most. I learned some of the recipes in this cookbook from different friends and relatives. I tried all of them myself and the results were fabulous. I would also like to mention that I included in this cookbook only those recipes which are fairly easy to cook, even though I have to admit that most of them will be ready in more than a couple of hours.

This because slow cooked meals need more cooking time compared to classic meals. The advantage comes from the fact that the slow cooking process is healthier and adds a great flavor. Furthermore, I selected only the healthiest Slow Cooker recipes that will provide you with a balanced diet.

The number of calories rarely goes beyond 500/ serving (2000-2500 calories/ day intake is recommended for a sedentary adult that needs to maintain his/ her current weight), therefore these are some recipes that will help you maintain or even lose some weight. I also tried to collect here only the low carb recipes, because low carbs meals are great for dieting.

Will certainly use this recipes book for a while. It comes with hundreds of delicious and healthy slow cooker recipes. I also like the fact that each recipe comes with the nutrition information section. We prepare a lot of slow cooked meals therefore this book will be very helpful. I like the fact that the cooking instructions are very clear and well-written. I also like the fact that all types of dishes are covered. The nutrition information that you can find under each recipe are also very helpful.

Something New: A Runaway Hearts Novel

Nearly seven hours plus of reading including bathroom and food breaks, that is how awesome reading this book was. The author’s imagination and the conversation between her people is fantastic, there aren’t enough adjectives to explain them. This is like the seventh book that I have read, and each one has been unique. Some of the books take place in the same city, and each book is as different as the sun and the moon.

A marriage of convenience is one thing. But married to a straight guy? That’s a whole different story…

Brooklyn Blackwell’s got a dissertation to finish and tenure to secure – the last thing he’s looking for is romance. But with his advisor’s charity on the brink of losing funding, Brooklyn’s got one shot at saving it. The bet seems easy enough: marry a straight guy, stay married for a year, and snag a hundred thousand dollars. It doesn’t count as romance if the guy’s not into him, right? This should be a piece of cake…

“Brooklyn, when I said you looked like someone who needed a date, what I meant was you needed to get laid. I was just trying to be polite.”

Austin Hastings never planned on getting married – to a man or a woman. Scarred by his parents’ impressively bad example, he planned on traveling the world, not winding up trapped in a relationship in some podunk town. But the longer Austin spends in his mind-numbing corporate job, the more monotonous his life becomes. Marrying a gay guy might seem a little strange, but there’s one thing it’s definitely not: Boring.

Coming on the heels of the 2016 election in which ignorance was celebrated and deliberate misinformation was allowed to proliferate this book is a welcome alarm bell for those of us concerned about the future of America. If you want to live in a country where facts and expertise in serious matters prevail over rampant bias, quackery, conspiracy theories, and general dumbassery then this book is one you will want to read.

People are now exposed to more information than ever before, provided both by technology and by increasing access to every level of education. These societal gains, however, have also helped fuel a surge in narcissistic and misguided intellectual egalitarianism that has crippled informed debates on any number of issues. Today, everyone knows everything: with only a quick trip through WebMD or Wikipedia, average citizens believe themselves to be on an equal intellectual footing with doctors and diplomats. All voices, even the most ridiculous, demand to be taken with equal seriousness, and any claim to the contrary is dismissed as undemocratic elitism.

As Tom Nichols shows in The Death of Expertise, this rejection of experts has occurred for many reasons, including the openness of the internet, the emergence of a customer satisfaction model in higher education, and the transformation of the news industry into a 24-hour entertainment machine. Paradoxically, the increasingly democratic dissemination of information, rather than producing an educated public, has instead created an army of ill-informed and angry citizens who denounce intellectual achievement.

Nichols has deeper concerns than the current rejection of expertise and learning, noting that when ordinary citizens believe that no one knows more than anyone else, democratic institutions themselves are in danger of falling either to populism or to technocracy-or in the worst case, a combination of both. The Death of Expertise is not only an exploration of a dangerous phenomenon but also a warning about the stability and survival of modern democracy in the Information Age.
