Eve"s Daughters

Read EveYearning for love and dignity, four generations of women must come to grips with the choices they’ve made–and those their mothers made before them. But breaking the cycle that has ensnared them over the decades will prove more difficult than they had ever imagined…

Eighty-year-old Emma Bauer has carefully guarded a dark secret for more than fifty years. But when she sees her granddaughter’s marriage beginning to unravel, Emma realizes that her lies about her own marriage have poisoned those she loves most. Can she help her granddaughter break free of a legacy of wrong choices? Or will she take her secret–and her broken heart–to the grave?

With honesty and compassion, author Lynn Austin weaves a compelling story of four unforgettable women–their struggles, their crises of faith, their triumphs.

Eve’s Daughters is a captivating story of four generations of women, and how the life choices of each have affected the next. The stories are told separately but the author ties them together masterfully to show the flow of actions and consequences.

It all begins when Louise is forced to come to the U.S. from Germany to join her husband, so that he can avoid fighting in WWI. It then focuses on one of Louise’s daughters, Emma, who marries one man to please her parents but loves another she can never have. Emma’s daughter Grace yearns for security above all. And Grace’s daughter is facing divorce after her drive for a career has alienated her from her own husband in the 1980’s. Emma has hidden a secret that is still impacting her granddaughter. She struggles with the difficult decision of revealing her true past in order to help heal her granddaughter’s marriage.

All the characters are painted vividly and it’s easy to identify with them, or at least understand why they developed the way they did. The ending is very satisfying. This is fine writing. I recommend it highly.

In Procrastinate on Purpose, Rory Vaden guides the reader through the thinking that makes people high acheivers. We all get 24 hours in a day. But what we do with those hours determines the course of our life. As someone who has built and sold a business, this book nails a core concept integral to creating a successful life. You need a framework for determining what matters, what YOU must work on now. Using Vaden’s “Focus “Funnel” gives you that framework.

If you’d like to make the next year measurably better from the prior one, I’d suggest you make an investment of this book. Huge return on investment.

Since Stephen Covey wrote about the concept of focusing on the important over and above the urgent, high-achievers have been diligently prioritizing their use of time. The only problem is that each day only allows for so many priorities. Sooner or later, no matter how persistent you are at doing the important, something slips through the cracks of your limited time.

In Procrastinate on Purpose, Rory Vaden applies a fresh approach to time management by adding a new dimension to the equation: significance. Vaden offers insight on how to make the most of this new perspective using five powerful and practical practices: elimination, automation, delegation, procrastination and concentration. Today’s highest achievers give themselves permission to use these practices daily. In Procrastinate on Purpose, Vaden shows you how to apply them to your life for better results.

[FREE] Read Online Portrait of Hemingway (Modern Library)

Portrait of Hemingway (Modern Library)

Read Portrait of Hemingway (Modern Library) Books Online FreeOn May 13, 1950, Lillian Ross’s first portrait of Ernest Hemingway was published in The New Yorker. It was an account of two days Hemingway spent in New York in 1949 on his way from Havana to Europe. This candid and affectionate profile was tremendously controversial at the time, to the great surprise of its author. Booklist said, “The piece immediately conveys to the reader the kind of man Hemingway was–hard-hitting, warm, and exuberantly alive.” It remains the classic eyewitness account of the legendary writer, and it is reproduced here with the preface Lillian Ross prepared for an edition of Portrait in 1961.

Ernest Hemingway was born on July 21, 1899, and to celebrate the centenary of this event, Ms. Ross has written a second portrait of Hemingway for The New Yorker, detailing the friendship the two struck up after the completion of the first piece. It is included here in an amended form. Together, these two works establish the definitive sketch of one of America’s greatest writers.

Portrait is a glimpse into the life of Hemingway over a two-day period. For fans of Hemingway, this is a fascinating snapshot of the famous Hemingway bravado and an offering of the vulnerability and sensitivity flowing immediately under the gruff and overly-confident exterior. Hemingway’s passion for art and alcohol is found here, and one can’t help but be reminded of his earlier devotion to, and inspiration from, painting rendered in A Moveable Feast. Sadly, one also anticipates the later disability compounded by the excessive drinking that finally extinguished such a brilliant career.

=======>> DOWNLOAD BOOK NOW, CLICK HERE!! <<=======

This book caused a commotion when it was first published because Hemingway came across as insensitive, but it is only the lazy reader not willing to dig a little deeper, and only the reader who allows the powerful prose of Ross to lull them into mere observation, who fails to recognize the whole of Hemingway’s character. If you are a Hemingway fan, or you want to scratch the surface of the life of a great writer who showed no fear in displaying his faults as readily as his virtues, and you don’t mind a few character quirks along the way, read this book.

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • Hailed by Toni Morrison as “required reading,” a bold and personal literary exploration of America’s racial history by “the single best writer on the subject of race in the United States” (The New York Observer)

“This is your country, this is your world, this is your body, and you must find some way to live within the all of it.”

In a profound work that pivots from the biggest questions about American history and ideals to the most intimate concerns of a father for his son, Ta-Nehisi Coates offers a powerful new framework for understanding our nation’s history and current crisis. Americans have built an empire on the idea of “race,” a falsehood that damages us all but falls most heavily on the bodies of black women and men—bodies exploited through slavery and segregation, and, today, threatened, locked up, and murdered out of all proportion. What is it like to inhabit a black body and find a way to live within it? And how can we all honestly reckon with this fraught history and free ourselves from its burden?

=======>> CLICK HERE TO READ BOOK ONLINE <<=======

Between the World and Me is Ta-Nehisi Coates’s attempt to answer these questions in a letter to his adolescent son. Coates shares with his son—and readers—the story of his awakening to the truth about his place in the world through a series of revelatory experiences, from Howard University to Civil War battlefields, from the South Side of Chicago to Paris, from his childhood home to the living rooms of mothers whose children’s lives were taken as American plunder. Beautifully woven from personal narrative, reimagined history, and fresh, emotionally charged reportage, Between the World and Me clearly illuminates the past, bracingly confronts our present, and offers a transcendent vision for a way forward.

One sided, fairly thick paper adult coloring book. Very detailed drawings! The cat faces pretty much look identical in every drawing, same kind of blank expression, but the intricate backgrounds and strong themes of each sheet make up for that. I particularly like the King and Queen playing card themed drawings. I would suggest putting a blank sheet of paper under the drawing you’re working on just for precaution. I have used felt tip markers and they bleed through to the back but since I use a divider, it doesn’t bleed into other pages. I think you could probably use watercolor pencils on this as well without any worry of tearing. Overall, I really love this book and would recommend prismacolor’s colored pencils to color them.

Cat fanciers and coloring enthusiasts will be enchanted with this gallery of original designs. More than 30 full-page portraits of pretty pussycats form a rich tapestry of motifs that includes hearts, flowers, and paisleys in various patterns. Pages are perforated and printed on one side only for easy removal and display. The designs are lovely and some are very intricate. You will need some fine pointed coloring utensils for some of these pages. They are one design per page, so you could use markers and not worry about bleed into the other designs.

[FREE] Read Online Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers

Read Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers Books Online Free“One of the funniest and most unusual books of the year….Gross, educational, and unexpectedly sidesplitting.”—Entertainment Weekly

Stiff is an oddly compelling, often hilarious exploration of the strange lives of our bodies postmortem. For two thousand years, cadavers—some willingly, some unwittingly—have been involved in science’s boldest strides and weirdest undertakings. They’ve tested France’s first guillotines, ridden the NASA Space Shuttle, been crucified in a Parisian laboratory to test the authenticity of the Shroud of Turin, and helped solve the mystery of TWA Flight 800. For every new surgical procedure, from heart transplants to gender reassignment surgery, cadavers have been there alongside surgeons, making history in their quiet way.

In this fascinating, ennobling account, Mary Roach visits the good deeds of cadavers over the centuries—from the anatomy labs and human-sourced pharmacies of medieval and nineteenth-century Europe to a human decay research facility in Tennessee, to a plastic surgery practice lab, to a Scandinavian funeral directors’ conference on human composting. In her droll, inimitable voice, Roach tells the engrossing story of our bodies when we are no longer with them.

In a cross between investigative reporting and hilarity, San Francisco journalist Mary Roach examines and proves her claim that ‘death doesn’t have to be boring.’ And she proves it with remarkable aplomb, including the answer to the nagging question of what really kills you if you jump from the Golden Gate Bridge.

Stiff is highly readable, even if you’re squeamish (which I’m not), because of the macabre, bizarre, and esoteric nature of much of her material, as well as the gallows humor and dark hilarity with which she spices her writing. That ‘material’ would be CADAVERS. Dum-de-dum-dum. Your only risk is that you might die laughing. Read it. Actually, buy a signed first edition. I think this one will stand the test of time.

=======>> CLICK HERE TO READ BOOK ONLINE <<=======

Mary Roach covers every aspect and experiences of death in this book. Very interesting and informative book- she tells us about the purposes of the bodys and what they do with them and the many experiences that they go through when donated to science and how they help us learn and they can go to many uses to help mankind like being used in experiments and can help solve mystery’s about crimes or accidents and can help us improve products so thier safe for the humans that are alive. This book has many fascinating storys and is very good read. Highly recomended.

It’s about a place south of the sweet-tea line (that place where waitresses ask you if you want tea but tell you that you have to sweeten it yourself). Here, we have friends with names like Snake, Rabbit, or Turtle. We all have heard accounts of highly successful doctors who chose to practice in the area when they could have made their fortunes as specialists in cities just minutes or hours away. This is a wonderful collection of such stories and a tribute to the unselfishness and humanity of these professionals.

This is about a young girl named Mia, who is kidnapped by Colin and is to be turned over to other people to be held for ransom. That is the plan, but in life as in this book, things do not always go as planned. What happened? You have to read the book to find out. You will read about Mia’s mom and dad and the detective who will stop at nothing to find her. Mia and Colin have their own story to tell. This is the author’s first novel and a fantastic read with an ending you will not see coming at all! Books do not get much better than this!

“I’ve been following her for the past few days. I know where she buys her groceries, where she has her dry cleaning done, where she works. I don’t know the color of her eyes or what they look like when she’s scared. But I will.”

Born to a prominent Chicago judge and his stifled socialite wife, Mia Dennett moves against the grain as a young inner-city art teacher. One night, Mia enters a bar to meet her on-again, off-again boyfriend. But when he doesn’t show, she unwisely leaves with an enigmatic stranger. With his smooth moves and modest wit, at first Colin Thatcher seems like a safe one-night stand. But following Colin home will turn out to be the worst mistake of Mia’s life.

Colin’s job was to abduct Mia as part of a wild extortion plot and deliver her to his employers. But the plan takes an unexpected turn when Colin suddenly decides to hide Mia in a secluded cabin in rural Minnesota, evading the police and his deadly superiors. Mia’s mother, Eve, and detective Gabe Hoffman will stop at nothing to find them, but no one could have predicted the emotional entanglements that eventually cause this family’s world to shatter.

An addictively suspenseful and tautly written thriller, The Good Girl is a propulsive debut that reveals how even in the perfect family, nothing is as it seems….

Go Set a Watchman: A Novel

Read Go Set a Watchman: A Novel Books Online FreeFrom Harper Lee comes a landmark new novel set two decades after her beloved Pulitzer Prize–winning masterpiece, To Kill a Mockingbird.

Maycomb, Alabama. Twenty-six-year-old Jean Louise Finch—”Scout”—returns home from New York City to visit her aging father, Atticus. Set against the backdrop of the civil rights tensions and political turmoil that were transforming the South, Jean Louise’s homecoming turns bittersweet when she learns disturbing truths about her close-knit family, the town, and the people dearest to her. Memories from her childhood flood back, and her values and assumptions are thrown into doubt. Featuring many of the iconic characters from To Kill a Mockingbird, Go Set a Watchman perfectly captures a young woman, and a world, in painful yet necessary transition out of the illusions of the past—a journey that can only be guided by one’s own conscience.

Written in the mid-1950s, Go Set a Watchman imparts a fuller, richer understanding and appreciation of Harper Lee. Here is an unforgettable novel of wisdom, humanity, passion, humor, and effortless precision—a profoundly affecting work of art that is both wonderfully evocative of another era and relevant to our own times. It not only confirms the enduring brilliance of To Kill a Mockingbird, but also serves as its essential companion, adding depth, context, and new meaning to an American classic.

In retrospect, it seems fitting that we all knew and came to love Scout as her young self before we had her almost-grown-up self to get to know and come to terms with. Harper Lee’s two masterpieces, it turns out, were published in the right order. And, honestly, I’m not sure we were ready for this second installment until now. This riveting story speaks directly to the world we live in today, grapples with the sociopolitical issues we are struggling with in 2015, and admits there are no easy answers nor simple solutions to the problems that divide people. Nonetheless, as it was with Ms. Lee’s first installment, we still have Jean Louise’s tenaciously hopeful belief that what’s right and good and true will ultimately win out over what’s wrong in the world, and we’re still hoping with and rooting for Scout as we have been since she first arrived on the scene 55 years ago.

[FREE] Read Online Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice

Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice

Read Unfair: The New Science of Criminal Injustice Books Online FreeAn addictive read, this book is full of injustice interleaved with sociology, psychology, human bias, and all the crazy things people have been certain were true in the past (like guilty people floating while the innocent would sink) and the crazy things we still believe today. Oh yeah, and the book is also full of hope. Some books are just depressing, and this one probably would be except there are quite a few suggestions of how we can improve criminal justice. A book to make you think and question your own assumptions, all the parts are wonderfully woven together and the writing just pulls you forward, page after page.

Unfair is an engaging, eye-opening read. By weaving together the latest findings in psychology and neuroscience with real-world stories of justice gone wrong, Unfair sheds new light on how easy it is for unconscious biases to wreak havoc on the criminal justice system and the steps that can be taken to make the system fairer.

A child is gunned down by a police officer; an investigator ignores critical clues in a case; an innocent man confesses to a crime he did not commit; a jury acquits a killer. The evidence is all around us: Our system of justice is fundamentally broken.

But it’s not for the reasons we tend to think, as law professor Adam Benforado argues in this eye-opening, galvanizing book. Even if the system operated exactly as it was designed to, we would still end up with wrongful convictions, trampled rights, and unequal treatment. This is because the roots of injustice lie not inside the dark hearts of racist police officers or dishonest prosecutors, but within the minds of each and every one of us.

=======>> DOWNLOAD BOOK NOW, CLICK HERE!! <<=======

This is difficult to accept. Our nation is founded on the idea that the law is impartial, that legal cases are won or lost on the basis of evidence, careful reasoning and nuanced argument. But they may, in fact, turn on the camera angle of a defendant’s taped confession, the number of photos in a mug shot book, or a simple word choice during a cross-examination. In Unfair, Benforado shines a light on this troubling new field of research, showing, for example, that people with certain facial features receive longer sentences and that judges are far more likely to grant parole first thing in the morning.

Over the last two decades, psychologists and neuroscientists have uncovered many cognitive forces that operate beyond our conscious awareness. Until we address these hidden biases head-on, Benforado argues, the social inequality we see now will only widen, as powerful players and institutions find ways to exploit the weaknesses of our legal system.

Weaving together historical examples, scientific studies, and compelling court cases—from the border collie put on trial in Kentucky to the five teenagers who falsely confessed in the Central Park Jogger case—Benforado shows how our judicial processes fail to uphold our values and protect society’s weakest members. With clarity and passion, he lays out the scope of the legal system’s dysfunction and proposes a wealth of practical reforms that could prevent injustice and help us achieve true fairness and equality before the law.

You need not be a lawyer to understand this account of the first of it’s kind “war crimes” trial. The background information alone is worth an entire book. What many people fail to realize is that it took months of hard work by dedicated lawyers to figure out complex issues, the least of which is the fact that the tribunal was not sure if they had the authority to conduct the trial. This is one of several issues faced by the tribunal and the authors have brought each to life.

Here is a gripping account of the major postwar trial of the Nazi hierarchy in World War II. The Nuremberg Trial brilliantly recreates the trial proceedings and offers a reasoned, often profound examination of the processes that created international law. From the whimpering of Kaltenbrunner and Ribbentrop on the stand to the icy coolness of Goering, each participant is vividly drawn. Includes twenty-four photographs of the key players as well as extensive references, sources, biographies, and an index.

This chronicle of International Military Tribunal is a must read since the Tribunal created the system of justice under which those who start aggressive wars and commit war crimes are prosecuted today. The difficult task faced by the tribunal and the prosecution to meld then existing international law, the Civil Law and the Common Law into a just, workable system is explained in terms a layperson can understand. The characterization of the personalities involved is extremely well done as well as the descriptions of the logistics problems inherent in conducting a trial in four languages simultaneously. Never boring!

=======>> CLICK HERE TO READ BOOK ONLINE <<=======

Utterly fascinating. At points difficult to believe because of the bizarre behavior of the participants on both sides, but completely true and well researched. Another window into a past we are well off without. Goering as feel-good motivator for the NAZI side? Hess as totally beyond rational thought? Military and political figures who were fired or retired before Hitler began his schemes of conquest being lumped in with the actual perpetrators of the evil the NAZI’s actually did? This book will make your head spin at times.

Sick in the Head: Conversations About Life and Comedy

Read Sick in the Head: Conversations About Life and Comedy Books Online FreeNEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Before becoming one of the most successful filmmakers in Hollywood, Judd Apatow was the original comedy nerd. At fifteen, he took a job washing dishes in a local comedy club—just so he could watch endless stand-up for free. At sixteen, he was hosting a show for his local high school radio station in Syosset, Long Island—a show that consisted of Q&As with his comedy heroes, from Garry Shandling to Jerry Seinfeld. They talked about their careers, the science of a good joke, and their dreams of future glory (turns out, Shandling was interested in having his own TV show one day and Steve Allen had already invented everything).

Thirty years later, Apatow is still that same comedy nerd—and he’s still interviewing funny people about why they do what they do.

Sick in the Head gathers Apatow’s most memorable and revealing conversations into one hilarious, wide-ranging, and incredibly candid collection that spans not only his career but his entire adult life. Here are the comedy legends who inspired and shaped him, from Mel Brooks to Steve Martin. Here are the contemporaries he grew up with in Hollywood, from Spike Jonze to Sarah Silverman. And here, finally, are the brightest stars in comedy today, many of whom Apatow has been fortunate to work with, from Seth Rogen to Amy Schumer. And along the way, something kind of magical happens: What started as a lifetime’s worth of conversations about comedy becomes something else entirely. It becomes an exploration of creativity, ambition, neediness, generosity, spirituality, and the joy that comes from making people laugh.

=======>> DOWNLOAD BOOK NOW, CLICK HERE!! <<=======

Loaded with the kind of back-of-the-club stories that comics tell one another when no one else is watching, this fascinating, personal (and borderline-obsessive) book is Judd Apatow’s gift to comedy nerds everywhere.

This is an essential text for anyone interested in comedy and the inner-workings behind the people who make us laugh. The truly remarkable part of this book is hearing Judd Apatow go from a teenage comedy nerd, enamored with his subjects, to their peer, a comedy giant in his own right. No other book of interviews with comedians will give you that unique look, from both inside and out.
