Mark Gimenez is on his way to legal-writing fame--if he's not there yet--and deservedly so. "The Perk" elevates him to yet another level. Once again, he paints his justice-versus-law story with accurate local color, this time in the quaint tourist town of Fredericksburg, in the Texas Hill Country. But this is far more than a legal thriller. It's a story strong and tender with plenty of love and heart. It begs to go up on the big screen, just as "Places in the Heart" and "Driving Miss Daisy" did. But this is no chick flick.
