Mark Gimenez is on his way to legal-writing fame--if he's not there yet--and deservedly so. "The Perk" elevates him to yet another level. Once again, he paints his justice-versus-law story with accurate local color, this time in the quaint tourist town of Fredericksburg, in the Texas Hill Country. But this is far more than a legal thriller. It's a story strong and tender with plenty of love and heart. It begs to go up on the big screen, just as "Places in the Heart" and "Driving Miss Daisy" did. But this is no chick flick. It's about strong men who are tested to their limits by families breaking apart, while the death of a teenage beauty hangs over them. It's about old money ruling a changing town, it's about high school football and its dark shadows, it's about the immigration problem, it's about men tortured by the deaths of their wives and the suffering of their children, it's about cancer, and still it comes down to love and survival. Readers will dearly miss these characters after the story ends.

It is a sad and funny drama that unfolds as Beck returns to his Texas roots after his wife dies of cancer. Returning to the father he left twenty four years earlier, filled with hate after his mother died. J.P. has never met his grandchildren, but looks forward to being the grandfather he knows they need. The characters are fully developed and are funny, sad, kind, and mean, enjoyable. From the lesbian couple to the rich that believe they are above the law, Beck deals with them all.
Mark Gimenez books are very hard to find. Our local library only has his first two books and we can't find any of his more recent books for sale at bookstores. (For some reason his books appear to be sold in the UK but not the US.) We were happy to find his books for sale on Amazon. The Perk is an excellent, well written book. I highly recommend it.
