Exhaustive. That's the one word I'd use to describe this work. But not in a bad way. This book is exhaustive in the same way as War and Peace is exhaustive: it gives us everything. Everything about Napoleon, from his private correspondences to the movement of his armies across Europe, is covered, and done so with Dr Roberts' typical first rate prose. Often times biographies of Napoleon will focus on Napoleon the politician, Napoleon the general, or Napoleon the lover.
