Exhaustive. That's the one word I'd use to describe this work. But not in a bad way. This book is exhaustive in the same way as War and Peace is exhaustive: it gives us everything. Everything about Napoleon, from his private correspondences to the movement of his armies across Europe, is covered, and done so with Dr Roberts' typical first rate prose. Often times biographies of Napoleon will focus on Napoleon the politician, Napoleon the general, or Napoleon the lover. This book focuses on all of them, and convincingly makes the case that far from being a proto-Hitler, Napleon was by and large a force for good. For those coming to Napoleon for the first time, this may not be the best work: it really does approach War and Peace in terms of length.
