Now a major motion picture! The Giver, the 1994 Newbery Medal winner, has become one of the most influential novels of our time. The haunting story centers on twelve-year-old Jonas, who lives in a seemingly ideal, if colorless, world of conformity and contentment. Not until he is given his life assignment as the Receiver of Memory does he begin to understand the dark, complex secrets behind his fragile community. This movie tie-in edition features cover art from the movie and exclusive Q&A with members of the cast, including Taylor Swift, Brenton Thwaites and Cameron Monaghan.
The colors you see every day could be different then the colors the person next to you sees. Your red could be their blue, your blue their orange, you have no way of ever knowing what they see. What would it be like if there were no colors to see at all? Would you trade seeing colors for an opportunity at a life without any suffering? This book is all about the choice of a world that’s with choice and emotion vs. a world without suffering and pain.
The Giver is focused around a young boy names Jonas who lives in a utopian society. A world where the characters number of children, spouses, careers, future, and even little things like haircuts are chosen for them. Jonas grows up just like any other child, although he shows little differences from others until his twelfth year. During this year his age group is given their lifelong careers, deciding their future. When Jonas’s career turns out to be far from what he or anyone else expected his life grows completely different than any other individuals in the community. He learns the secrets and consequences of his perfect community and what they are missing out on.
The language in this book is very simple and the book is a quick read, even though it is a bit long. The morals and society it sets up really make the reader stop and think about a utopian society. I would highly recommend this book, because it is both interesting and thought provoking. Although it lacks in character depth and description of the town, the story makes up for it in other aspects.
