Steven Levy’s In The Plex does a fantastic job of describing the history of Google and how it runs. It starts with Google’s inception by Larry Page and Sergey Brin at Stanford, and continues up until more recent events in China. The motives behind Page and Brin’s actions are explained in detail. The information is very comprehensive, and describes many of Google’s philosophies. It really provides insight into the decisions made by the company, in addition to how it operated from the beginning and continues to operate today. It is easy for even those not technically inclined to read, and explains both the technical and business side of Google. The book describes many of the major differences between Google and other businesses, including its employee structure and culture. Unfortunately, comparisons to other specific technology corporations are few and far between, in addition to context on Google’s actions. I would recommend this book to anyone who feels that they would be interested in learning more about Google.

Steven Levy is a senior writer at Wired, and was formerly senior editor and chief technology correspondent for Newsweek. He is the author of several books, including Hackers, Insanely Great, and The Perfect Thing.
