The Comfort of Lies: A Novel

I highly recommend Randy Susan Meyers' second novel, The Comfort of Lies. (Also check out her debut, The Murderer's Daughters, if you haven't already...) The author has done a masterful job of weaving together the perspectives of three women who are strangers to each other, yet bound by the result of an extramarital affair: a young girl. The story revolves around the emotional struggles of the birth mother of the child, who gave her up for adoption and comes to regret it; the woman who adopts her only to please her husband; and the woman whose cheating husband fathered the child without ever telling her. All three navigate their disappointment/dissatisfaction under a veil of lies--to others, but especially to themselves--fabricating impossible outcomes that can never become reality. The characters are written with such empathy that--despite their conflicting paths--the reader wants to root for them all.

Randy Susan Meyers is the bestselling author of The Comfort of Lies and The Murderer’s Daughters and a finalist for the Massachusetts Book Award. Her writing is informed by her work with batterers and victims of domestic violence, as well her experience with youth impacted by street violence.
