The souls of black folk is a short (aprox. 200 pg) but very informative explanation of the life of African Americans around the 20th century. It explains that while slavery had ended and private ownership of land was legal for African Americans it was very difficult. Firstly, because slavery was more or less continued through share cropping, and secondly because of wage discrimination between blacks and whites most African Americans who were slaves or descendants of slaves had to scrape a meager living just to provide food, shelter and clothing. W.E.B. Dubois is a very eloquent writer and if you are a student or scholar of African American literature this is a must read.

This landmark book is a founding work in the literature of black protest. W. E. B. Du Bois (1868-1963) played a key role in developing the strategy and program that dominated early 20th-century black protest in America. In this collection of essays, first published together in 1903, he eloquently affirms that it is beneath the dignity of a human being to beg for those rights that belong inherently to all mankind. He also charges that the strategy of accommodation to white supremacy advanced by Booker T. Washington, then the most influential black leader in America, would only serve to perpetuate black oppression.

Publication of The Souls of Black Folk was a dramatic event that helped to polarize black leaders into two groups: the more conservative followers of Washington and the more radical supporters of aggressive protest. Its influence cannot be overstated. It is essential reading for everyone interested in African-American history and the struggle for civil rights in America.

This is a must read for any non-Black person who desires to understand the struggles of the Black population during the late 1800's. It is a powerful primary source document from DuBois that gives the reader a first-hand look at the challenges of post-Civil War life for newly-freed slaves, the trials of trying to find jobs, having to resort to farming in poor conditions, the conditions of being in unfair debt to store owners, and the struggles related to education. This is better than any textbook regarding the struggles of the Black population in America.
