You are not going to learn everything about Steve Martin. This is more like sitting with Steve Martin in a bar and him telling you a story. Its a gift really, some guy sits down and tells you he was once the biggest comic in the world. As you listen to the story he goes off on a little tangent once in a while but it is a nice conversation and when you finish you realize you might have just met the smartest guy you may ever know.

In the midseventies, Steve Martin exploded onto the comedy scene. By 1978 he was the biggest concert draw in the history of stand-up. In 1981 he quit forever. This book is, in his own words, the story of “why I did stand-up and why I walked away.”

Emmy and Grammy Award winner, author of the acclaimed New York Times bestsellers Shopgirl and The Pleasure of My Company, and a regular contributor to The New Yorker, Martin has always been awriter. His memoir of his years in stand-up is candid, spectacularly amusing, and beautifully written.

At age ten Martin started his career at Disneyland, selling guidebooks in the newly opened theme park. In the decade that followed, he worked in the Disney magic shop and the Bird Cage Theatre at Knott’s Berry Farm, performing his first magic/comedy act a dozen times a week. The story of these years, during which he practiced and honed his craft, is moving and revelatory. The dedication to excellence and innovation is formed at an astonishingly early age and never wavers or wanes.

=======>> CLICK HERE TO READ BOOK ONLINE <<=======

Martin illuminates the sacrifice, discipline, and originality that made him an icon and informs his work to this day. To be this good, to perform so frequently, was isolating and lonely. It took Martin decades to reconnect with his parents and sister, and he tells that story with great tenderness. Martin also paints a portrait of his times — the era of free love and protests against the war in Vietnam, the heady irreverence of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in the late sixties, and the transformative new voice of Saturday Night Live in the seventies.

Throughout the text, Martin has placed photographs, many never seen before. Born Standing Up is a superb testament to the sheer tenacity, focus, and daring of one of the greatest and most iconoclastic comedians of all time.

Paul Newman: A Life

Read Paul Newman: A Life Books Online FreePaul Newman, the Oscar-winning actor with the legendary blue eyes, achieved superstar status by playing charismatic renegades, broken heroes, and winsome antiheroes in such revered films as The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Verdict, The Color of Money, and Nobody’s Fool. But Newman was also an oddity in Hollywood: the rare box-office titan who cared about the craft of acting, the sexy leading man known for the staying power of his marriage, and the humble celebrity who made philanthropy his calling card long before it was cool.

The son of a successful entrepreneur, Newman grew up in a prosperous Cleveland suburb. Despite fears that he would fail to live up to his father’s expectations, Newman bypassed the family sporting goods business to pursue an acting career. After struggling as a theater and television actor, Newman saw his star rise in a tragic twist of fate, landing the role of boxer Rocky Graziano in Somebody Up There Likes Me when James Dean was killed in a car accident. Though he would joke about instances of “Newman’s luck” throughout his career, he refused to coast on his stunning boyish looks and impish charm. Part of the original Actors Studio generation, Newman demanded a high level of rigor and clarity from every project. The artistic battles that nearly derailed his early movie career would pay off handsomely at the box office and earn him critical acclaim.

He applied that tenacity to every endeavor both on and off the set. The outspoken Newman used his celebrity to call attention to political causes dear to his heart, including civil rights and nuclear proliferation. Taking up auto racing in midlife, Newman became the oldest driver to ever win a major professional auto race. A food enthusiast who would dress his own salads in restaurants, he launched the Newman’s Own brand dedicated to fresh ingredients, a nonprofit juggernaut that has generated more than $250 million for charity.

In Paul Newman: A Life, film critic and pop culture historian Shawn Levy gives readers the ultimate behind-the-scenes examination of the actor’s life, from his merry pranks on the set to his lasting romance with Joanne Woodward to the devastating impact of his son’s death from a drug overdose. This definitive biography is a fascinating portrait of an extraordinarily gifted man who gave back as much as he got out of life and just happened to be one of the most celebrated movie stars of the twentieth century.

Shawn Levy has written a very complete biography. He covers Paul Newman’s very extensive life methodicaly and honesty. Everyone knows about the basics, most films and the racing, but not the details. They are in this book. It is especially refreshing to see more of the man behind the myth. Loved the racing stories and the behind the scenes pranks. Highly recommended!

For readers enchanted by the bestsellers The Astronaut Wives Club, The Girls of Atomic City, and Summer at Tiffany’s, an absorbing tale of romance and resilience—the true story of four British women who crossed the Atlantic for love, coming to America at the end of World War II to make a new life with the American servicemen they married.

The “friendly invasion” of Britain by over a million American G.I.s bewitched a generation of young women deprived of male company during the Second World War. With their exotic accents, smart uniforms, and aura of Hollywood glamour, the G.I.s easily conquered their hearts, leaving British boys fighting abroad green with envy. But for girls like Sylvia, Margaret, Gwendolyn, and even the skeptical Rae, American soldiers offered something even more tantalizing than chocolate, chewing gum, and nylon stockings: an escape route from Blitz-ravaged Britain, an opportunity for a new life in affluent, modern America.

=======>> CLICK HERE TO READ BOOK ONLINE <<=======

Through the stories of these four women, G.I. Brides illuminates the experiences of war brides who found themselves in a foreign culture thousands of miles away from family and friends, with men they hardly knew. Some struggled with the isolation of life in rural America, or found their soldier less than heroic in civilian life. But most persevered, determined to turn their wartime romance into a lifelong love affair, and prove to those back home that a Hollywood ending of their own was possible.

G.I. Brides includes an eight-pages insert that features 45-black-and-white photos.

Bill Bryson’s Made in America is a joy from start to finish. The only problem is that it may be slow reading as you will want to call all your friends after every page to say, “Did you know …” (A brief warning: They will begin to be annoyed if you do this too often but just try and stop yourself). The book is more than an informal history of the English Language in the United States (as per the subtitle) as it covers all of American history, both political and social, in the author’s delightful style. One story will lead into another and you will have forgotten where you began but the ride will always be worth it. Before your very eyes he will dispel many of the myths of America and build up America with some solid truths. An wonderfully funny and smart work.

In this sequel to his history of the English language, “Mother Tongue”, Bryson takes an informed and fond look at the history of Americans through their popular culture and language. He explains why they drive on the right, say “lootenant”, and call a certain type of sandwich a “hamburger”.

This book gives a fascinating account of the history of America from an unusual linguistic point of view. If you have any interest whatsoever in who we (Americans) are and how we came think and speak the way we do, yet don’t wish to undertake an exhaustive study of American history, you couldn’t find a better or more interesting book. Filled with particularly pertinent and amusing anecdotes (yet lacking antidotes, despite the comments of another reviewer), “Made in America” provides a surprisingly personal and memorable look at the the American experience.

Made In America is a delightful look at American history through language, or perhaps the American language through history. Bryson wanders all over the map (both literally and figuratively)with his tales of linguistic and social history. There are chapters on everything from Native American place names to the movies, from housing to advertising. Full of tidbits for any historical writer, and entertainment for any reader.

Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget

Read Blackout: Remembering the Things I Drank to Forget Books Online Free“It’s such a savage thing to lose your memory, but the crazy thing is, it doesn’t hurt one bit. A blackout doesn’t sting, or stab, or leave a scar when it robs you. Close your eyes and open them again. That’s what a blackout feels like.”

For Sarah Hepola, alcohol was “the gasoline of all adventure.” She spent her evenings at cocktail parties and dark bars where she proudly stayed till last call. Drinking felt like freedom, part of her birthright as a strong, enlightened twenty-first-century woman.

But there was a price. She often blacked out, waking up with a blank space where four hours should be. Mornings became detective work on her own life. What did I say last night? How did I meet that guy? She apologized for things she couldn’t remember doing, as though she were cleaning up after an evil twin. Publicly, she covered her shame with self-deprecating jokes, and her career flourished, but as the blackouts accumulated, she could no longer avoid a sinking truth. The fuel she thought she needed was draining her spirit instead.

A memoir of unblinking honesty and poignant, laugh-out-loud humor, BLACKOUT is the story of a woman stumbling into a new kind of adventure–the sober life she never wanted. Shining a light into her blackouts, she discovers the person she buried, as well as the confidence, intimacy, and creativity she once believed came only from a bottle. Her tale will resonate with anyone who has been forced to reinvent or struggled in the face of necessary change. It’s about giving up the thing you cherish most–but getting yourself back in return.

If you or another have ever struggled with addiction and want a stroll down memory lane, then this is a good one to read.

The kind of book you think about when your not reading it. Read it in less than 2 days. Really enjoyed this real life tale of survival which happened in the 1800’s but its written in current vernacular. Interesting portrayal of how some groups survive vs. perish depending on the way they organize themselves and how ingenuity can make the impossible happen. Don’t read it if clubbing seals is too much to handle. Not overly graphic but not pleasant to read. They had to eat so its part of the story. Learning about the animals behaviors was interesting overall.

Auckland Island is a godforsaken place in the middle of the Southern Ocean, 285 miles south of New Zealand. With year-round freezing rain and howling winds, it is one of the most forbidding places in the world. To be shipwrecked there means almost certain death.

In 1864 Captain Thomas Musgrave and his crew of four aboard the schooner Grafton wreck on the southern end of the island. Utterly alone in a dense coastal forest, plagued by stinging blowflies and relentless rain, Captain Musgrave—rather than succumb to this dismal fate—inspires his men to take action. With barely more than their bare hands, they build a cabin and, remarkably, a forge, where they manufacture their tools. Under Musgrave’s leadership, they band together and remain civilized through even the darkest and most terrifying days.

Incredibly, at the same time on the opposite end of the island—twenty miles of impassable cliffs and chasms away—the Invercauld wrecks during a horrible storm. Nineteen men stagger ashore. Unlike Captain Musgrave, the captain of the Invercauld falls apart given the same dismal circumstances. His men fight and split up; some die of starvation, others turn to cannibalism. Only three survive. Musgrave and all of his men not only endure for nearly two years, they also plan their own astonishing escape, setting off on one of the most courageous sea voyages in history.

Using the survivors’ journals and historical records, award-winning maritime historian Joan Druett brings this extraordinary untold story to life, a story about leadership and the fine line between order and chaos.

Miracle in the Mine: One Man"s Story of Strength and Survival in the Chilean Mines

Read Miracle in the Mine: One ManOn October 13, 2010, millions of television viewers on five continents literally stopped everything to watch the amazing rescue of 33 men trapped underground in the mine of San José de Copiapó in northern Chile. What had seemed at first a hopeless tragedy later became a triumph of human effort, courage, perseverance, and expertise. For 17 excruciating days no one knew whether any of the miners had survived the collapse of the mine shaft, nor were the surviving miners aware of any rescue attempts. They spent a total of 69 days trapped underground.

And it was there, in that frightening cavern, that one man took on the responsibility of encouraging the others and use the tragedy as an opportunity to share his faith. Miracle in the Mine is the story of José Henríquez. The testimony of a man who was no stranger to danger even before he found himself trapped 2,300 feet under the earth in the San José mine. A man who has unequivocally demonstrated his integrity, courage, and moral strength both before, during, and after the mining accident, and who is now using this experience to inspire the world.

An amazing story of survival under extreme circumstances by the 23 miners underground for 79 days. Their working together and being able to get along with each other as well as acknowledging the 24th person in their midst, the Lord God himself, a powerful answer to consistent prayer and being one in all they did to keep themselves alive with limited food and places to exercise. An amazing answer to prayer as so many of them came to know Christ personally.

A History of the World in 6 Glasses

Read A History of the World in 6 Glasses Books Online FreeFrom beer to Coca-Cola, the six drinks that have helped shape human history. Throughout human history, certain drinks have done much more than just quench thirst. As Tom Standage relates with authority and charm, six of them have had a surprisingly pervasive influence on the course of history, becoming the defining drink during a pivotal historical period.

A History of the World in 6 Glasses tells the story of humanity from the Stone Age to the 21st century through the lens of beer, wine, spirits, coffee, tea, and cola. Beer was first made in the Fertile Crescent and by 3000 B.C.E. was so important to Mesopotamia and Egypt that it was used to pay wages. In ancient Greece wine became the main export of her vast seaborne trade, helping spread Greek culture abroad. Spirits such as brandy and rum fueled the Age of Exploration, fortifying seamen on long voyages and oiling the pernicious slave trade.

Although coffee originated in the Arab world, it stoked revolutionary thought in Europe during the Age of Reason, when coffeehouses became centers of intellectual exchange. And hundreds of years after the Chinese began drinking tea, it became especially popular in Britain, with far-reaching effects on British foreign policy. Finally, though carbonated drinks were invented in 18th-century Europe they became a 20th-century phenomenon, and Coca-Cola in particular is the leading symbol of globalization.

For Tom Standage, each drink is a kind of technology, a catalyst for advancing culture by which he demonstrates the intricate interplay of different civilizations. You may never look at your favorite drink the same way again.

This was an easy and enjoyable book to read because it details the history of our common beverages: beer, wine, distilled spirits, coffee, tea and finally, coca cola. Each chapter shows the historical context of the beverage and is very informative. Who knew the Greeks and the Romans watered down their wine! Who knew that the Soviet military leader in World War II requested and received non colored coca cola that would look like Vodka and was labeled with a red Soviet star! This book is a fun read.

Since the dawn of man, bragging has been evolving, growing more elusive and resilient. Thank you, Harris Wittels, for identifying the new strain, the “humblebrag.” Humanity is forever in your debt.

HUMBLEBRAG: The Art of False Modesty is an amazing assembly of hilariousness and an anthology of heartbreaking insecurity. Enjoy it-but don’t forget how sad it is.

From comedian and writer (Parks and Recreation, Eastbound & Down) Harris Wittels comes a hysterical breakdown of boasts, brags, and self-adulation disguised as humble comments and complaints-based on his popular @humblebrag Twitter feed.

Something immediately annoyed Harris Wittels about Twitter. All of a sudden it was acceptable to brag, so long as those brags were ever-so-thinly disguised as transparent humility, such as:

“Just filed my taxes. Biggie was right, mo money mo problems.”

=======>> CLICK HERE TO READ BOOK ONLINE <<=======

“I hate when I go into a store to get something to eat and the male staff are too busy hitting on me to get my order right :( so annoying!”

Taking action by naming this phenomenon and creating the Twitter account called Humblebrag-dedicated solely to retweeting the humblebrags of others-Wittels’s new word took the Internet by storm. Harris also shows readers what humblebrags might look like from some of history’s most notable names, as well as devoting an entire chapter to a man who just might be the greatest humblebraggart of them all…

Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls (The New 52)

Read Batman Vol. 1: The Court of Owls (The New 52) Books Online FreeScott Snyder is the light at the end of a dark tunnel of Batman writers. The Court of Owls starts the new run of Batman books off at a high standard, playing with everything from the very mannor in which a comic book is formatted to the way we perceive Bruce Wayne as a character, a nuance too often forgone by Batman writers. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

The reader will experience the story from Batman’s viewpoint on pages 108-117.

Following his ground-breaking, critically acclaimed run on Detective Comics, writer Scott Snyder (American Vampire) alongside artist Greg Capullo (Spawn) begins a new era of The Dark Knight as with the relaunch of Batman, as a part of DC Comics—The New 52!

After a series of brutal murders rocks Gotham City, Batman begins to realize that perhaps these crimes go far deeper than appearances suggest. As the Caped Crusader begins to unravel this deadly mystery, he discovers a conspiracy going back to his youth and beyond to the origins of the city he’s sworn to protect. Could the Court of Owls, once thought to be nothing more than an urban legend, be behind the crime and corruption? Or is Bruce Wayne losing his grip on sanity and falling prey to the pressures of his war on crime?

The artwork was not as good as other DC comics but the story line was excellent. I cannot remember seeing Batman actually scared and rattled as in this story. Seeing him question his belief in Gotham City was astonishing. Excellent background information on Richard Grayson’s origin. Cannot wait for Vol 2. Recommended reading for every fan of Batman….and the original Robin….and Nightwing

In “Stories from the Wastelands” there are many excellent short stories. They are by different authors, and that gives really good flavor to the genre. This collection has some excellent short stories. No spoilers given here, but I enjoyed every one of the short stories in this book.

Famine, Death, War, and Pestilence: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse, the harbingers of Armageddon — these are our guides through the Wastelands… From the Book of Revelations to The Road Warrior; from A Canticle for Leibowitz to The Road, storytellers have long imagined the end of the world, weaving tales of catastrophe, chaos, and calamity. Gathering together the best post-apocalyptic literature of the last two decades from many of today’s most renowned authors of speculative fiction, including George R.R. Martin, Gene Wolfe, Orson Scott Card, Carol Emshwiller, Jonathan Lethem, Octavia E. Butler, and Stephen King, Wastelands explores the scientific, psychological, and philosophical questions of what it means to remain human in the wake of Armageddon.

The individual stories that make up this collection are very good. Tastes differ from reader to reader, but there’s something for everyone in this long, varied collection. The best thing about this book, as others have mentioned, is the range of stories included.

=======>> CLICK HERE TO READ BOOK ONLINE <<=======

Most of us come to post-apocalyptic literature from one angle or another, and Adams provides a good mix of the range of ideas that have swirled around the sub-genre since its inception. If you’re new to the sub-genre, this is a great place to start. If you’re familiar with it, these stories (and the appended bibliography) tell you where to go among today’s authors for contemporary visions of Life After.

God"s Indwelling Presence: The Holy Spirit in the Old and New Testaments (New American Commentary Studies in Bible & Theology)

Read GodWere ordinary members of the old covenant remnant continually indwelt by the Holy Spirit? The inaugural volume of the NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY STUDIES IN BIBLE AND THEOLOGY seeks an answer to this question. This new series is geared for pastors, advanced Bible students, and other deeply committed laypersons.

God’s Indwelling Presence pursues answers to the following questions: Are regeneration and indwelling the same thing? What do the words indwelling and regeneration mean? What does the Old Testament say about where the Spirit dwelt in relationship to God’s people? How does the anointing of Jesus with the Spirit affect our understanding of these questions? If old covenant believers were not indwelt by the Spirit, how did they become and remain faithful to God?

Users will find this an excellent extension of the long-respected NEW AMERICAN COMMENTARY.

Great perspective. Good writing. Hamilton is helpful in examining all the relevant passages and gives clear assertions and hypotheses. You never wonder where he’s going. The book was helpful and thorough. Highly recommend.

=======>> DOWNLOAD BOOK NOW, CLICK HERE!! <<=======

I would recommend Hamilton’s book to all students of the Bible, especially pastors and teachers. Many believers and even church leaders would not be able to speak intelligibly or biblically on the Spirit’s work in both of the covenants. If presented with “Positions on the Holy Spirit and Old Covenant Believers,” many Southern Baptist leaders might not even be able to identify where they stood and the texts that support their position (23). Hamilton’s work offers both the pastor and the layman a sound biblical approach to understanding the Spirit’s work among old covenant believers. This book is helpful to “fill in the gaps” in understanding the Holy Spirit and the Spirit’s work in both covenants.

It was good to read about people who helped others during the war. Many of the people who put their lives in jeopardy by hiding the escaped prisoners or Jewish people. The story reminds one we are not an island and others who need help are part of our lives also.

During the German occupation of Rome from 1942–1944, Irishman Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty ran an escape organization for Allied POWs and civilians, including Jews. Safe within the Vatican state, he regularly ventured out in disguise to continue his mission, which earned him the nickname “the Pimpernel of the Vatican.” When the Allies entered Rome, he and his collaborators— priests, nuns, and laypeople of numerous nationalities and religious beliefs—had saved the lives of over 6,500 people.

The first new telling of this extraordinary story in decades, this book also addresses the fascinating dichotomy between O’Flaherty and Herbert Kappler, the Gestapo chief in Rome who ordered him killed, and who, after the war, reconciled with the monsignor, and even asked him to perform his baptism.

For his heroic efforts, O’Flaherty was awarded the highest honors, including a Congressional Medal, and was the first Irishman named the Notary of the Holy Office. His story was immortalized in the 1983 film The Scarlet and the Black, which starred Gregory Peck as O’Flaherty.
