From award-winning author Sharon Draper comes Out of My Mind, the story of a brilliant girl who cannot speak or write.
“If there is one book teens and parents (and everyone else) should read this year, Out of My Mind should be it” (Denver Post).
Melody is not like most people. She cannot walk or talk, but she has a photographic memory; she can remember every detail of everything she has ever experienced. She is smarter than most of the adults who try to diagnose her and smarter than her classmates in her integrated classroom—the very same classmates who dismiss her as mentally challenged, because she cannot tell them otherwise. But Melody refuses to be defined by cerebral palsy. And she’s determined to let everyone know it…somehow.
In this breakthrough story—reminiscent of The Diving Bell and the Butterfly—from multiple Coretta Scott King Award-winner Sharon Draper, readers will come to know a brilliant mind and a brave spirit who will change forever how they look at anyone with a disability.
Can you imagine having a million thoughts in your head but not being able to say them? That is the life of Melody Brooks. Melody is incapable of doing almost anything that we take for granted. It must be so frustrating to be unable to share any of the thoughts that fly through her mind. She is a regular person just like you and me except for her disability, a condition called cerebral palsy which prevents her from being able to walk or talk. Very few people know it, but she is actually extremely intelligent even though it took her eleven years to find her voice. Her remarkable memory and vivid imagination take her above and beyond the ordinary. Her parents and her good friend and neighbor, Violet, protected her and supported her. So did her faithful canine companion, Butterscotch. Our sixth-grade class really enjoyed reading this book and we strongly recommend it for people who may take things for granted. Out of My Mind is a fantastic realistic story.

This book is a great read for everybody. Sharon really grasps the thoughts of how people disrespect handicap people. Melody is a very smart “normal” girl on the inside who was unlucky enough to be born with a broken body. Maybe if more people saw this view point they would treat each other better. Melody seemed to be just a lump in a chair, but had feelings like everybody and a lot more smarts than most people.
