“Replacement Child by Judy L. Mandel is a book I recommend to anyone curious about the true story of one family who was caught up in the tragedy of the second plane crash.” —Judy Blume, from In the Unlikely Event
Judy L. Mandel was born into a family crippled by grief. But it would be years before she would discover the shocking circumstances of their loss.
In her award-winning memoir, Replacement Child, Mandel tells the true story of a horrifying accident: A plane crashes into a family’s home, leaving one daughter severely burned and another dead. The death of the child leaves a hole in the family that threatens to tear it apart. In an attempt to fill the painful gap, the parents give birth to a “replacement child.”
This powerful tale of love and lies, family and hope, is an intimate account of being brought into the world to provide “a salve for the burns.” As a child, Mandel unwittingly rides the deep and hidden currents of her family’s grief—until her discovery of this family secret, years later, changes her life forever, forcing her to confront the complex layers of her relationships with her father, mother, and sister.
The author, Judy Mandel managed to weave her parents’ and sisters’ tragic story and how that impacted her into a flawless journey between the past and present. A horrible airplane accident that took place in a matter of seconds is divided into 19 chapters and perfectly ‘shuffled’ (like a deck of cards) into over 50 short and precise memoir chapters. And back to the accident, suddenly, just like it must have felt to all on board. Slow Motion. That’s what it felt like. You know, when someone describes a tragic accident, they say ‘it felt like slow motion’. And that’s what the accident in Replacement Child feels like.

You are on the airplane, you are in the apartment building it crashes into. You run down the stairs with Judy’s mother as she rescues one of her daughters. Then as you are left hanging, suspended seconds before impact, you are taken into the heart and mind of Judy, born after the tragedy, born to heal her parents and surviving sister from the horrible death of the one who died. Incredible. Simply an incredible story. I highly recommend this book!
