Before. Miles “Pudge” Halter is done with his safe life at home. His whole life has been one big non-event, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave “the Great Perhaps” even more (Francois Rabelais, poet). He heads off to the sometimes crazy and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young. She is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart. Then. . . .
After. Nothing is ever the same.
Looking for Alaska is a smart novel set in an Alabama boarding school. The main characters are in their junior year and in between quoting Robert Frost, reading Moby Dick and keeping up their GPA they find plenty of time for pranks, drinking, smoking and sex. It is by no means all light hearted fun. The students ponder the meaning of life, tragedy and suffering inspired the wonderful Dr. Hyde the Religious studies teacher. These troubled and sometimes reckless students are balanced with a refreshing intelligence and depth and even if there are some cliché characters all have a distinct persona. This is a captivating read for older teens and adults with plenty to sink your mind into.
This book is truly, truly, amazing. At first, it may seem a tad slow, but once you really get into it and start to learn more about the characters, it is obviously a very brilliantly written book. The plot surrounding Alaska's death is sad, as we get attached to her by the middle of the book, but also leaves room for extra enlightenment and growth by the main characters, namely Pudge and the Colonel. This book is absolutely magnificent, to say the least. I highly recommend it, it's definitely worth the read.
