In 1942 Paris, gifted architect Lucien Bernard accepts a commission that will bring him a great deal of money – and maybe get him killed. But if he's clever enough, he'll avoid any trouble. All he has to do is design a secret hiding place for a wealthy Jewish man, a space so invisible that even the most determined German officer won't find it. He sorely needs the money, and outwitting the Nazis who have occupied his beloved city is a challenge he can't resist.

But when one of his hiding spaces fails horribly, and the problem of where to hide a Jew becomes terribly personal, Lucien can no longer ignore what's at stake. The Paris Architect asks us to consider what we owe each other, and just how far we'll go to make things right. Written by an architect whose knowledge imbues every page, this story becomes more gripping with every soul hidden and every life saved.

Lucien Bernard, a young architect, is living in Nazi-occupied Paris in 1942. Preoccupied with the need to earn some money, he accepts a commission to design hiding places for Jews in homes this benefactor owns. At the same time, Lucien is designing munitions factories for the Germans. Talk about a conflict of interest! But it isn't really a conflict--Lucien doesn't care about the Jews or the war--he just wants the money. So the really wonderful thing about this novel is watching Lucien's character change until he is very much in opposition to the Germans and endangering his life to see their defeat become a reality. It's a wonderful and scary story!

"The Paris Architect" introduces you to the harsh realities of Nazi conquered Paris and part of France. The politics and horror of the Holocaust in France, and the individual responses, are anguished and complex. The main character goes through his own changes in accepting requests for help from those hiding Jews. As an architect he evolves into a source of creative and effective hiding places in Paris apartments and country homes. The tension builds, the Gestapo in Paris close in on him - and help comes from a surprising source. If you are interested in the history of WW II, especially the Nazi occupation in Paris; if you relish a good mystery/adventure novel that will keep you on the edge of your seat; for that and more this is a book I highly recommend

About the Author

An architect by profession, Charles Belfoure has published several architectural histories, one of which one a Graham Foundation Grant for architectural research. He graduated from the Pratt Institute and Columbia University, and he taught at Pratt as well as at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland. His area of specialty is historic preservation. He has been a freelance writer for the Baltimore Sun and the New York Times. He lives in Maryland.
