The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures

Read The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down: A Hmong Child, Her American Doctors, and the Collision of Two Cultures Books Online FreeThe Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down explores the clash between a small county hospital in California and a refugee family from Laos over the care of Lia Lee, a Hmong child diagnosed with severe epilepsy. Lia's parents and her doctors both wanted what was best for Lia, but the lack of understanding between them led to tragedy. Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Nonfiction, the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Current Interest, and the Salon Book Award, Anne Fadiman's compassionate account of this cultural impasse is literary journalism at its finest. The current edition, published for the book's fifteenth anniversary, includes a new afterword by the author that provides updates on the major characters along with reflections on how they have changed Fadiman's life and attitudes.

This is a well-written and heart-wrenching story about a young girl who has severe epilepsy. In this book, cultures collide for a Hmong family from Laos who live in the United States. The language, culture and healing practices of the Hmong family contrast sharply with Western Medicine. This makes the story even more complex and tragic. An excellent book for people interesting in health, medicine, neurological disorders/diseases, cultural studies and social work.

This is not a fun read, but the writing makes what could be a dry, uncomfortable saga quite touching and engaging. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants to learn more about a different culture, whether it be the culture of the Hmong people, or the culture of western medicine in the US.
