This is one of those books that comes along and touches the readers life forever. It's a beautifully written book about an extraordinary woman and how she conquered a life of hardship and adversity. Throughout her life she fought for herself and her family, and never gave up when life turned hard. At the end if her life she was accepting of what life handed her, and thankful for the happiness she did get to experience through the years. This truly is an amazing book. Try it. You'll love each moment of reading, and will be sorry to see it end.
Her story covers from early childhood becoming a orphan too Her elderly years. Covering late 1800s too WW1. She is married off at 14, but fortunate he is a good man and good in-laws. They start a family but tragic accident causes his death. Many years later she is again pushed into marriage. This man although not bad is not as loving as her first husband. She experiences sadness and devotes to the children and house. Her new mother in law gives her lots of problems, even threatening her life. She treats her badly when their first baby is born, but treats the child well. It's a wonderful story of her up and down life. Illness, deaths, poverty but she kept up her faith and strength.
In 1906, I was barely over fourteen years old, and it was my wedding day. My older sister, Helen, came to my room, took me by the hand, and sat me down on the bed. She opened her mouth to say something, but then her face flushed, and she turned her head to look out the window. After a second, she squeezed my hand and looked back in my eyes. She said, “You’ve always been a good girl, Maude, and done what I told you. Now, you’re going to be a married woman, and he will be the head of the house. When you go home tonight after your party, no matter what he wants to do to you, you have to let him do it. Do you understand?” I didn’t understand, but I nodded my head anyway. It sounded strange to me, the way so many things did. I would do what she told me. I didn’t have a choice, any more than I had a choice in being born.
A must read this book kept me reading till the end couldn't put it down. The life of Maud told thru her granddaughter as Maude told her. So much for a child then into woman how many woman now at days would of survive this time. A must read.
