Disney will never touch this one, thank goodness, because it will never sell any lunchboxes or socks or underwear. The lyrical, cinematic retelling of East of the Sun, West of the Moon will enrich the lives of children (or even adults) who are lucky enough to latch onto it. Teachers would do well to read this aloud in middle school (are they still allowed to do that in spite of the Every Child Left Behind rules?) or even high school. It is about finding your destiny and being a hero, about being the one who is willing to risk it all for the sake of others. A mighty tale, great for these times and the challenges they give us.

Delightful take on a Norwegian folktale. A lass must live a year with a bear in an ice castle in order to bring her family riches. If she can not, the bear must marry a troll. This well-written book was bittersweet and delightful. A striking book which highlights lass's love and ingenuity. A true gem.
