If you enjoy books by Robert Crais and Robert B. Parker, you'll love this one. This is a great police procedural filled with realistic characters and sly humor. Despite the cover blurb, there is no mysticism or supernatural entities, although there are subtle religious references. Officer Gideon does have internal demons from his past, but he is working through them with the help of his K-9 partner Sirius. And Sirius is a very smart dog, but no smarter than Lassie or Rin-Tin-Tin. The interplay between Gideon and Sirius is affectionate without being mushy, and in some ways is a partnership of equals. Still, I recommend you read the other book first, to fully understand what drives Gideon.
